13th International VTS Symposium

The 13th International VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) Symposium will convene at the Kuala Lumpur Convention & Exhibition Centre (KLCC) on 8-12 August 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The symposium is promoted by IALA - AISM (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities), an international organization for Marine Traffic Control and Maritime Surveillance, association with the Marine Department of Malaysia.

The theme of the 2016 Symposium is "Sustainable Safe Navigation", where participants will be presenting and discussing the current challenges and opportunities both in VTS and Domain Awareness. Planned themes for the Symposium are the role of VTS in Maritime Domain Awareness, the role of VTS Operations in Port/Waterway Efficiency, VTS Beyond Territorial Seas and in Polar Regions, future trends and technological development of this sector, VTS and e-navigation, professional competencies, Information Exchange & Management, Innovations and Improvements in VTS Operations.

IALA would like to welcome you to the 13th IALA International Symposium on Vessel Traffic Services, between 8 - 12 August 2016. The Symposium will take place in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which is situated on a short distance of the important Strait of Malacca, and is being held in conjunction with the Marine Department of Malaysia.

The theme of the VTS Symposium is 'Sustainable Safe Navigation', which means that an interesting contemporary programme awaits you.

The 2016 Symposium will be a forum where delegates can discuss current challenges and opportunities in VTS with a view on the future. Planned themes for the Symposium are trends in VTS based on expertise and experience while focusing on areas such as recent developments for decision support, communications and technology. Also the role of VST in an international framework and e-navigation are topics for exchange of information and discussion. The important and growing role of VTS training and simulation will be highlighted. The ability to exchange views with world-class experts in the field of VTS and associated topics, both inside and outside the technical sessions, is an opportunity not to be missed.

On behalf of the Malaysian Government, I would like to welcome delegates, IALA members and friends to the 13th IALA International Symposium on Vessel Traffic Services 2016 which will take place in our capital city of Kuala Lumpur from the 8th to 12th August.

Malaysia is privileged to host this symposium, which is held every four years in IALA Calendar. The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, where the symposium will take place is in the hub of Kuala Lumpur City Centre, is next to the PETRONAS twin tower and offers excellent facilities for the symposium.

The symposium is a meeting point for VTS experts, manufacturers and the end users for further development of VTS. Recent technological developments in e-Navigation and communication have made VTS even challenging in the future. Participants are encouraged to use this platform to discuss and present appopriate recommendations for future actions.

I am sure the symposium will be a tremedous success particularly for maritime field. With Malaysia hospitality and our diverse cultural background, which made "Malaysia Truly Asia", will make the symposium something to be well remembered and appreciated.
